Flatwater River Kayak Instructor Trainer
This mentorship process provides national certification in the instruction and administration of the Paddle Canada Flatwater River Kayak Instructor course.
Mandate of the Flatwater River Kayak Instructor Trainer
The Flatwater River Kayak instructor trainer is certified to conduct Paddle Canada Flatwater River Kayak Instructor courses and certify Instructors at that level.
Prerequisites
Prerequisites must be completed before the assessment process. The Flatwater River Kayak instructor trainer apprentice must have the following:
Age
At least 18 years of age.
Membership
Current Paddle Canada membership and Provincial/Territory membership (as required).
Skills Certification
Intermediate River Kayak Skills
Instructor Certification
Beginner River Kayak Instructor
Instructor Trainer Certification
Successful completion of general Paddle Canada Instructor Trainer requirements.
Teaching Experience
Lead four or more Flatwater River Kayak Skills courses with at least three participants in each course, with at least one course happening within the last certification maintenance window.
Certification Awarded
Paddle Canada Flatwater River Kayaking Instructor Trainer.
Minimum Staff and Certification
One Beginner River Kayak Instructor Trainer.
Environmental Conditions
Mentorships must be held in Flatwater River Kayak skills course appropriate locations; however, the Instructor Trainer must evaluate the personal skills of the candidate in Class II water at some time during the mentorship outside of course instruction.

Candidate Assessment
Assessment occurs on an ongoing basis throughout the mentorship process. The Instructor Trainer (IT) apprentice must assist on at least two Flatwater River Kayak Instructor courses. After each course, the IT mentor must provide timely feedback to the apprentice IT.
A Beginner River Kayak Instructor Trainer is required to assess a Flatwater River Kayak IT apprentice. The IT apprentice can work with the same IT mentor on both courses.
