All craft must meet standards appropriate to the conditions, skill level of the course and have sufficient flotation.

All instructors are required by law to meet or exceed the Guided Excursion regulations of the Canada Shipping Act. See our summary of Guided Excursions page for information.

Paddlers will wear an approved PFD at all times on the water except when stand up paddleboarding in the surf zone or when a program is run in a supervised pool setting where it is optional. The pool must have appropriately trained lifeguards on duty. Staff teaching or assisting cannot also be acting as the lifeguards.

Helmets will be worn when paddling in moving water or breaking waves near shore, unless otherwise stated in a program manual.

In the interest of ensuring all course content is appropriately covered, one instructor cannot offer two differing level skill or instructor courses simultaneously (for example, one instructor cannot teach a Level-2 skills program and a Level-3 skills program at the same time).
